What are differences the rdsrv from Teamviewer and such other?

At last time cloud technology has got widespread. Many public servers are offered for communications and data storing. Indeed the cloud has apparent advantages but its using also creates serious problem.

The problem is weak protection of privacy data from unauthorized access. Really, time from time, we get news about hacking of some public network or stealing information from the cloud. It's clear, in addition to user errors, there are software errors. The work with it is going permanently but even in ideal case, there are people (admins and etc) having access to your privacy data in order to do them work (here we make no noise about contract conditions and professional ethic, remembering Snowden). Personally I upload to the cloud only encrypted archives or insignificant files.

Therefore, if using Teamviewer for one-time connections has sense, but creating network of permanently connected computers (for administrative purpose) can be dangerous. The other, hacking one of many tiny networks created with this remote desktop access server has no dangerous for others. And each of those networks has own IP address and port for connection, therefore finding attractive for hacking network is difficult. At last, here is good news for you and not quite for me, this project actually has no widespread, so there is nobody who could even think in direction to find and hack such server. Use the moment :-)

Are there plans to develop clients and the server for other platforms in addition to Windows?

Such plans are, but about specific dates yet impossible to say.

Why does SmartScreen say the program can be dangerous?

Browser has got executive file from the remote desktop access server. The file has no digital sign (a digital sign costs money, but the project is free, and if it would get some further developing then it will get a digital sign). And so the file is downloaded rarely (for each IP address of the remote desktop access server is compiled own client with unique binary image, therefore that problem has no decision). All this forces SmartScreen (or other same software) to think that the program can be dangerous. But I responsibly say, if you have downloaded the program from my site then there is no danger, at least embedded deliberately.

The server cannot start.

Next reason can cause it. The remote desktop access server at startup tries to create settings file. The filename is same as executive file but with "ini" extension. The file must be placed in same folder where executive file of remote desktop access server is placed. If the remote desktop access server is running as regular application (not Windows service) there could be not enough rights to write (create file) in current folder. Here is decision to give write access for this folder to user who is running the remote desktop access server.

I have downloaded the server. And where can I take clients or control programs?

The executive file of the remote desktop access server contains inside self all needed images. It uploads them to browser over HTTP on request. Next, after starting on remote desktop, remote client or connection manager connects to server to the address from whence it was loaded. Besides, the copy of remote desktop client is stored in user folder "My document/Documents" on remote desktop with name "rdloader.exe" (icon is blue asterisk). It makes possible to run remote desktop client without typing url in browser (if you do not use autorun).

For further information, please, go to quick start and how does it work.

How can I change the password of connection manager?

The password is in settings file with "ini" extension, in same folder where executive file of the remote desktop access server is. You can change it with any text editor.

How can I update the server to latest version and where can I see current version?

You can see current version in properties of executive file of the remote desktop access server at "Detail" sheet.

It is enough to replace the executive file with new file that was compiled on this site with same address and port. All clients will automatically update at first startup.

What does button "layered window" do?

There is enough rarely used type of window that is displayed by system using video hardware. It is popup tips notification area of taskbar in Windows XP or semiopaque panel of RDP client in Windows 7. The most significant example is main menu in Microsoft Office 2007.

Therefore some problem appears at getting screen picture on remote desktop. In short, there are two ways to do it. The first works fast and without side effects but "does not see" those windows. The second "sees all" but works slowly and causes cursor blinking on remote desktop.

The button "layered window" can switch the way of getting picture. The "fast mode" is default but if you think something on screen is absent you can try to press this button.

There are prefixes "+/-" before username and prefix "d:" before internal IP. What do they mean?

+ means the user has admin rights in his session. - means the user consists in admin group but he is working with standard user rights, UAC is enabled and the attempt to run some programs will require privileges elevation on remote desktop. If username has no prefix the user doesn't have admin rights and doesn't consist in admin group. In this case the elevation request will call prompt for entering admin password. If UAC is enabled you cannot remotely complete this.

d: means the IP address was retrieved over DHCP.

I can see remote desktop picture but cannot control mouse and keyboard.

By default, after connecting to remote desktop, the sending keystrokes and mouse movement are disabled. In this mode you can see remote desktop but cannot interact with it. Pressing the button (shown below) can switch control client to interaction mode. If the button has already been pressed, please, go to here.

rdsrv

After start program that requires elevation do not work mouse and keyboard.

If username for this connection in control manager has prefix "-" the remote desktop client is running with standard user rights and cannot send messages to the elevated programs. To fix the problem you can use elevation request for the remote desktop client itself. There is the button for it (shown below). Certainly there will need help of remote user. Important! After elevation you need again to press button for enabling interaction mode with remote desktop.

When I try to enable autorun for all users it issues error. What to do?

You need have admin rights in system in order to enable autorun for all users. At first you need to request elevation for remote desktop client. Without elevation you can only enable autorun for current user. There is also possible blocking from antivirus software.

After typing password in connection manager there is no list of remote desktop clients and window header is blinking.

It is possible invalid password has been typed. You need to close connection manager and start it again from browser. Then retype the password. There is no special error or message for invalid password. There is simply unsuccessful connection.

The control client window has been opened but there is no picture of remote desktop.

It is possible when user session on remote desktop is locked (instead can be active another user session) or remote desktop client is running inside terminal session and its window is minimized. The remote client, when connection with control client has been established, turns off automatic start of screensaver and locking of user session by timeout. But if session has been already locked, please, try this and read Windows XP restriction, just in case.

How can I send to/receive from remote desktop a clipboard or file?

Two pictures are shown below. There are buttons for sending to remote desktop and receiving from remote desktop. If you need to transfer a file you should copy it to clipboard on sending side, transfer, and apply "paste" in any folder on receiving side. At this moment single file transferring is only supported. The file size cannot be more than 2 GB. Please, use archiver.

How can I make logon or switching user??

At first there must be enabled autorun for all users. In addition to run remote desktop client, it registers in system special library that makes possible to do remote logon. After you make logoff or select changing current user, extra string appears in connection manager. It has same computer name and "winlogon" user name. The double click at it calls a dialog box with prompts for username and password. If username and password have been entered properly (it can be username and password of previous user to come back to his session), the extra string disappears and session of selected user is started. If there is no such username or password is invalid, no error appears. And you can repeat the attempt. Please, look Windows XP restriction also.

rdsrv

How can I disable elevation request?

You will need help of remote user. Press the button (shown below). Dialog box for disabling UAC appears on remote desktop. Remote user need to move the slider down and reboot computer. Please, remember to enable autorun if you want to continue work without remote user.

rdsrv

Why the connection manager displays the same computer more than one time?

It is possible when there is running several user session and autorun for all users is enabled. In any case, there can appear string with "winlogon" user name. The last means remote desktop is waiting for username and password to enter to any already opened session or create new one.

rdsrv

What are there restrictions for remote desktop client on Windows XP?

If you even have enabled autorun for all users, after logoff or attempt to switch current user you cannot make logon again. There is simply no string with "winlogon" user name.

The cause for it in short, since Windows Vista is used the new way to make logon for third side software. Because support Windows XP had been ended by Microsoft I have decided to not do dedicated library for this case.

What can I do if I need anyway? At first, Windows XP has no UAC and something else. Therefore even with standard user rights you can easy to run programs with admin rights (without help of remote user, of course if you know admin password, using "Run as..."). It is usually enough for administrative purposes. If you need anyway logon with another user you can use the button (shown below) to call a dialog box for enabling automatic user logon, select user and set password, then reboot computer. Do not remember to enable autorun for all users!

Known problems.

If you encounter any problem or non standard behavior of the remote desktop access server (or its components), please, send info to support@rdsrv.org

  • if remote user has locked workstation rather than makes logoff or selects switch user, the attempt to login using extra string "winlogon" can fail
  • the version OS "Windows 8.1" displays as "Windows 8", and in case with extra string "winlogon" displays as "6.3"
